Imagine how much more effective your business and personal relationships would be if you really understood how other people see things…and could put this awareness into practice.

The Strengths Deployment Inventory

The Strength Deployment Inventory (SDI), a psychological inventory based on the work of Dr. Elias Porter is a useful tool for examining interpersonal relationships and, in particular, for improving capacity to manage and respond to conflict situations.

The SDI utilises Relationship Awareness Theory to improve participants’ awareness and understanding of why people act the way they do, and why they respond to conflict and opposition the way they do.

In our work with both staff and managers we find many are concerned about dealing with conflict in the workplace, particularly in the following situations:

  • Discussing difficult or sensitive issues with staff, bosses, clients and/or work colleagues
  • Providing feedback to bosses
  • Managing demanding stakeholders
  • Responding to inter-personal differences.

The SDI takes an innovative approach to assisting people to identify their characteristic strengths, as well as their “overdone strengths” and suggests ways in which they can be used to achieve mutually productive outcomes with other people in conflict situations.
Participants complete the SDI booklet during our programs and retain the booklet for future reference. Results are debriefed, and inferences drawn concerning the various conflict resolution styles and approaches.

Our previous experience suggests that this inventory is particularly relevant to leaders as it provides personal insights and understanding that assists individuals to lead and work effectively with people in team environments.
